래치는 플립플롭과 유사한 기본 디지털 메모리 장치이지만 래치 활성화(또는 비슷한 이름의) 신호가 유효한 논리 상태에 있을 때 언제든지 유지된 논리 상태가 변경될 수 있다는 점에서 다릅니다. "투명"으로 설명된 래치는 유지된 상태가 고정된 경우에만 상태를 변경하는 것과 달리 래치 활성화 신호가 유효한 동안 장치 출력이 입력의 현재 상태를 반영할 수 있도록 합니다.
