BQ79616-Q1
The BQ79616-Q1 is a high-precision battery management system (BMS) controller designed for automotive-grade lithium-ion battery packs. It features a 16-bit microcontroller with integrated analog front-end (AFE) to monitor up to 16 series-connected cells, offering accurate voltage measurement accuracy within ±2 mV and cell balancing current of up to 50 mA per channel. The device supports both passive and active cell balancing, ensuring optimal charge distribution across the battery pack and extending overall lifespan.
This IC includes a robust communication interface via CAN FD, enabling high-speed data transfer at up to 5 Mbps, which is essential for real-time monitoring in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). It also supports I²C for configuration and diagnostics, allowing flexible integration into complex power systems. The BQ79616-Q1 incorporates advanced safety features such as overvoltage, undervoltage, overtemperature, and short-circuit protection, all monitored continuously by on-chip sensors and logic.
Designed for harsh automotive environments, the BQ79616-Q1 meets AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification and operates reliably over a temperature range from -40°C to +125°C. Its low quiescent current—less than 10 µA in standby mode—helps reduce power consumption in always-on systems. The device integrates a programmable watchdog timer, internal oscillator, and self-diagnostics to enhance system reliability and fault detection.
In applications like EV battery packs, energy storage systems, and industrial battery solutions, the BQ79616-Q1 enables precise state-of-charge (SoC) and state-of-health (SoH) estimation through built-in algorithms that process cell voltage, temperature, and current data. It also supports multiple protection modes including thermal shutdown, overcurrent detection, and open/shorted-cell detection, ensuring safe operation under abnormal conditions.
With its scalable architecture, the BQ79616-Q1 can be used in multi-module configurations to support large battery arrays while maintaining consistent performance. The device’s modular design allows for easy customization via software updates, making it adaptable to evolving battery chemistries and system requirements. Texas Instruments provides comprehensive development tools and reference designs to accelerate time-to-market for engineers implementing this BMS solution.
