BQ25188
The BQ25188 is a highly integrated battery charging management IC designed by Texas Instruments for portable and battery-powered applications. It supports single-cell lithium-ion or lithium-polymer battery charging with an input voltage range from 4.5 V to 28 V, making it suitable for both USB and AC adapter inputs. The device features a programmable constant-current/constant-voltage (CC/CV) charging algorithm that ensures safe and efficient battery charging while minimizing power loss.
This charger integrates a high-efficiency synchronous buck converter, enabling up to 96% efficiency in charging operations. It includes built-in protection mechanisms such as overvoltage, overcurrent, overtemperature, and thermal shutdown, which enhance system reliability under varying environmental conditions. Additionally, the BQ25188 supports smart charge termination based on the batteryโs state-of-charge (SOC), reducing the risk of overcharging and extending battery life.
The IC offers configurable charging current and voltage settings via an IยฒC interface, allowing for flexible system design without requiring external components for basic configuration. It also includes a low-power sleep mode and automatic reactivation upon detection of a valid input source, which helps reduce quiescent current during idle periodsโcritical for battery-operated devices aiming to maximize runtime.
Designed for compact form factors, the BQ25188 operates in a small 3 mm ร 3 mm WQFN package, simplifying PCB layout and integration into space-constrained applications. Its internal power MOSFETs eliminate the need for external switches, reducing component count and overall system cost. The device supports both linear and switching modes automatically, depending on input voltage and load conditions, optimizing performance across different operating scenarios.
Common applications include handheld medical devices, portable test equipment, industrial sensors, consumer electronics like tablets and wearables, and IoT edge nodes where reliable, efficient, and compact battery charging solutions are essential. With its robust feature set and support for wide input voltage ranges, the BQ25188 is ideal for systems requiring high performance, safety, and minimal design complexity.
