VL53L3CX
The VL53L3CX is a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor developed by STMicroelectronics, designed for high-precision distance measurement in compact form factors. It features a 16x16 pixel array that enables multi-zone ranging, allowing simultaneous detection of multiple objects within its field of view. The sensor supports a maximum range of up to 4 meters at 100% reflectance, with an accuracy of ±2 cm over the full range. Its operating distance can be adjusted via software to optimize performance based on application needs.
This device leverages ST’s FlightSense technology, which integrates advanced signal processing algorithms to reduce noise and improve reliability in challenging environments such as low-light conditions or under direct sunlight. It operates at a wavelength of 940 nm, making it eye-safe and suitable for consumer and industrial applications. The VL53L3CX supports both I²C and SPI communication interfaces, offering flexibility in system integration. It also includes embedded firmware for automatic calibration and temperature compensation, ensuring consistent performance across varying environmental conditions.
Designed for power efficiency, the sensor operates in ultra-low-power modes, consuming less than 10 mW during active measurements and even lower in sleep mode—ideal for battery-powered devices. It supports configurable frame rates from 1 Hz up to 30 Hz, enabling real-time depth sensing for dynamic applications. The chip includes built-in object tracking capabilities, allowing users to follow moving targets across multiple zones without external processing.
The VL53L3CX is widely used in smart home devices, robotics, automotive systems, and industrial automation. In robotics, it facilitates obstacle avoidance and navigation; in automotive applications, it supports driver assistance functions like blind-spot detection and parking aid systems. For consumer electronics, it enables gesture recognition, presence detection, and spatial awareness in devices such as smart speakers, drones, and handheld tools. Its small package size (2.5 mm x 2.5 mm) and robust performance make it ideal for space-constrained designs requiring reliable proximity sensing.
The sensor includes an integrated microcontroller for onboard processing, reducing the need for external host processors while maintaining high throughput. It also supports multi-sensor synchronization for use in arrays, enabling wide-area coverage in advanced applications like 3D mapping or volumetric sensing. With support for embedded firmware updates, the VL53L3CX ensures long-term adaptability and enhanced functionality through future software improvements.
