NCP1680
The NCP1680 is a high-efficiency, current-mode PWM controller designed for offline flyback converters in power supply applications. It features an integrated 700V high-voltage start-up circuit and operates over a wide input voltage range, making it suitable for universal AC inputs from 85V to 265V. The device incorporates a built-in oscillator with adjustable frequency operation from 50kHz to 1MHz, enabling flexible design optimization for efficiency, size, and EMI performance.
Key features include accurate current sensing through a low-side current sense resistor, which supports precise peak current limiting and cycle-by-cycle protection. The NCP1680 also includes comprehensive protection mechanisms such as overvoltage protection (OVP), overcurrent protection (OCP), thermal shutdown, and under-voltage lockout (UVLO). These protections enhance system reliability and safety, especially in consumer electronics and industrial power supplies where robustness is critical.
This controller supports both primary-side regulation (PSR) and secondary-side feedback configurations, offering flexibility in design and cost reduction by eliminating the need for optocouplers in some applications. Its adaptive slope compensation ensures stable operation across varying load and line conditions, while the internal high-current driver improves switching performance and reduces gate drive losses.
The NCP1680 is optimized for low standby power consumption, achieving less than 30mW in standby mode, which meets stringent energy efficiency standards like Energy Star and CoC V5. This makes it ideal for battery chargers, LED drivers, and small appliances requiring high efficiency and minimal quiescent current.
Designed for ease of use, the NCP1680 requires minimal external components and offers programmable soft-start to reduce inrush current during startup. It also includes a frequency foldback feature that adjusts the operating frequency under light-load conditions to maintain high efficiency across the entire load range.
Applications span consumer electronics, home appliances, medical devices, and industrial systems where compact, efficient, and reliable power conversion is essential. The device is packaged in a 8-pin DIP package, ensuring compatibility with standard PCB layouts and easy integration into existing designs.
