SJA1124
The SJA1124 is a high-performance Ethernet switch IC manufactured by NXP Semiconductors, designed for use in automotive and industrial applications requiring deterministic communication and robust network management. It supports up to 12 independent VLANs and implements IEEE 802.1Q, IEEE 802.1AS (time synchronization), and IEEE 802.1Qbv (time-aware shaping) standards, enabling precise traffic scheduling and low-latency data transmission critical for real-time systems.
This device features four or eight physical ports with configurable speeds of 10/100/1000 Mbps, depending on the variant, and includes hardware-based traffic classification, policing, and prioritization through IEEE 802.1p/Q. The SJA1124 also supports advanced security functions such as MACsec (IEEE 802.1AE) for encrypted communication, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality across networks. Its integrated QoS engine allows for efficient bandwidth allocation among multiple streams, making it ideal for safety-critical environments like autonomous driving or industrial automation.
The chip operates within a wide temperature range (-40ยฐC to +125ยฐC) and complies with AEC-Q100 Grade 2 qualification, guaranteeing reliability under harsh environmental conditions. It includes a built-in microcontroller unit (MCU) for firmware execution and system control, reducing the need for external processors. Additionally, the SJA1124 supports various configuration interfaces including SPI, I2C, and RMII, allowing flexible integration into existing system architectures.
Its power-efficient design enables operation at low quiescent current levels, essential for always-on automotive systems. The device also offers comprehensive diagnostics, including link status monitoring, error counters, and port statistics, facilitating proactive maintenance and fault detection. With support for time-sensitive networking (TSN) protocols, the SJA1124 ensures seamless interoperability with other TSN-compliant devices, forming scalable and deterministic communication infrastructures.
These capabilities make the SJA1124 particularly suitable for applications such as in-vehicle infotainment, ADAS systems, industrial Ethernet networks, and smart grid infrastructure where reliable, secure, and synchronized communication is paramount.
