MCP1790
The MCP1790 is a low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator manufactured by Microchip Technology, designed for efficient power management in portable and battery-powered applications. It provides a stable output voltage of 3.3 V with a maximum output current of 150 mA, making it suitable for powering microcontrollers, sensors, and other low-power digital circuits. The device features an ultra-low quiescent current of just 2.5 ฮผA in normal operation and as low as 0.4 ฮผA in shutdown mode, significantly extending battery life in energy-sensitive systems.
This regulator operates from an input voltage range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V, offering flexibility across various power sources such as single-cell batteries or multi-cell configurations. Its dropout voltage is exceptionally lowโtypically 150 mV at full loadโensuring high efficiency even when the input voltage approaches the output level. This characteristic is particularly beneficial in applications where minimizing power loss and maximizing battery utilization are critical.
The MCP1790 includes built-in protection features such as thermal shutdown, over-current protection, and reverse-battery protection, enhancing system reliability and robustness in harsh environments. These protections help prevent damage under fault conditions, ensuring safe and continuous operation. Additionally, the device is stable with a wide range of output capacitors, including ceramic capacitors as small as 1 ฮผF, simplifying PCB layout and reducing component count.
Designed for space-constrained applications, the MCP1790 is available in a compact 3-pin SOT-23 package, ideal for use in wearable electronics, IoT devices, medical equipment, and handheld instruments. Its low noise and high ripple rejection performance ensure clean power delivery to sensitive analog and digital components, improving overall system performance and signal integrity.
In industrial and consumer applications, the MCP1790 supports reliable operation across a broad temperature range from -40ยฐC to +125ยฐC, making it well-suited for both indoor and outdoor environments. The combination of high efficiency, minimal quiescent current, and comprehensive protection mechanisms makes this LDO regulator a preferred choice for modern embedded systems requiring stable, low-power voltage regulation.
